How to get buried with military honors

Quick answerEligible veterans are entitled to military funeral honors when the family asks. That means at least a two-person detail, the folding and presentation of the flag, and Taps. The funeral director usually requests honors from the veteran’s service branch. Allow at least 48 to 72 hours.

How to request

  1. Tell the funeral director the person was a veteran. The director or the family’s representative requests honors from the service branch. At a VA national cemetery, cemetery staff can help.
  2. Have the DD-214 (discharge papers) ready. If you can’t find it, next of kin can request it from the National Archives using Standard Form 180 or online.
